Food soon going into mylar+buckets
Ok guys...
I have the oxysorbers, buckets, and mylar bags coming in the mail. I picked up a 25lb bag of flour and sugar at costco, and have loads of other lentils and whatnot going into 1/2 mason jars. Any tips you can provide for the buckets? I was going to use the foodsaver to seal the food into vaccume bags, then place those into the buckets lined in Mylar bags with oxysorbers. Will this get me by for 5yrs of so? :565: food storage goofin! |
Re: Food soon going into mylar+buckets
If you are putting multiple bags into a bucket each bag should have an O2 absorber. If not, each individual bag will end up with some oxygen left in it. If you are vacuum sealing each bag that will definitely help and yes you would probably be good for 5 years.
I would definitely put an O2 absorber in with flour, as flour is much harder to store for long periods than whole grains. sb |

Well it feels good to be taking care of business...got 2 cases of pint jars last night for various fruit/nuts and smaller portions of other items. Coffee beans are one thing I'm going to stock up on.
Also thinking about picking up a case of 12 pints Jack Daniels... |

Re: Food soon going into mylar+buckets
I haven't gotten around to doing any buckets yet, but the 1 quart mason jars are going full ahead.
Gots to get me some more O2 absorbers soon. Vacuum sealing plus 02 absorbers plus storing the buckets/jars inside should make dry goods last for a couple decades. Thanks to all at GIM for helping me get my head right about preps! |
Re: Food soon going into mylar+buckets
Not to sound lazy, its more about running out of prep time.....constantly working 6 days a week to get cash for goods and pm's!!!!
Is there a service like Wendy that can deliver sealed food goods prepared and contained ready packed? I dont like spam lol:spam4: Monty Python! |

You sound good to go but if you have any other questions head over to Jim Rawles blog
http://www.survivalblog.com/ Here's an idea as well. What I did when I put up my stores. fill the bucket within 1-2 inches of the top and then place a lit short candle and place it on top of the leveled out food product. Then get a nitrogen bottle and place the nozzle into the food product IE Rice or beans, Corn, Oats, etc (Not flour) Push the nozzle to the bottom and crack the valve to let the nitrogen flow from the bottom up. When the candle is extinguished wait 30 sec to 1 minute and remove the candle and seal the bucket. this ensures that the bucket is void of oxygen. Quote:
